Berck Beats Competition and Elements for First win of 2020
By Anthony Ainslie

The Malvern Bank Super Late Models’ most decorated driver found victory lane for the first time in the 2020 season with a thriller at Adams County Speedway.
Round eight of the season for the Malvern Bank West Series was a challenging one as the race started about an hour late because of a rain delay. The 2020 Ray Houck Memorial marked the series’ 15th ever visit to the big half-mile at the Adams County Fairgrounds. A field of 24 cars made the trip out to Corning, Iowa, and all 24 took the green flag for the 30-lap main event.
Corey Zeitner opened the race by taking the lead off turn two. From there, The Bellevue, Nebraska driver led the first eight laps before the first caution came out. Another caution came out two laps later for a spin in turn two.
As the field came off turn four to complete the next lap, Kyle Berck threw a slide job on Zeitner and took command of the lead. Berck led going into the next yellow flag with 18 laps to go.
The wreck with 18 to go took out some heavy hitters as Jason O’Brien and Zeitner made contact sending both drivers around and also collected the top two drivers in the point standings, Bill Leighton Jr. and Tad Pospisil. Leighton and Pospisil both went to the pits and were able to make repairs in order to continue. However, Zeitner and O’Brien were out of the race.
Josh Leonard brought out the final caution of the race after he stopped in turn two with issues with 16 laps left. Leonard dropped out of the race after running most of the race in the top five.
The feature came down to a battle between Berck and Ben Shaller. The drivers who finished first and second in the points one year ago settled the score as the two ran out the final laps, and in the end, Berck stood tall in victory lane. It was Berck’s 8th career Malvern Bank Series win at Adams County Speedway, most at the speedway, and his record 89th career series feature win. Berck’s win also marks the 9th different winner in 10 races between the Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series.
Schaller had to settle for second while Charlie McKenna came from 12th to take third. J.C. Wyman raced his way to fourth from the 14th starting position edging out Justin Zeitner by half a car length.
The Malvern Bank West Series returns to action on August 8th with the tour’s only visit of the year to the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska. The series then takes the following two weekends off as the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series gears up for a big three-day weekend with two races at the Davenport Speedway in Davenport, Iowa on August 14th and 15th and then at the Bullring at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds in East Moline, Illinois on the 16th.
