Bruening Scores $5,300 in Malvern Bank/Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking series’ return to I-80
By Anthony Ainslie
7/22/20
The Malvern Bank West Series and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series clashed on the high banks of I-80 Speedway to kick off the tenth annual Silver Dollar Nationals Wednesday night.
A massive field of 44 cars made the trip out to Greenwood, Nebraska’s 4/10 mile oval for the biggest racing weekend in Nebraska for round seven for the West Series and round five for the east series. After five big heat races and two B features, the field was narrowed down to 26 cars for the 40-lap main event.
Ben Schaller took the lead to start things off. The Omaha native led the first three laps before Tyler Bruening took over the lead. Schaller’s race ended the very next lap when his motor went up in smoke bringing out the first caution.
Point leader Bill Leighton Jr. had hard luck after a wreck on the back stretch on lap six cost him a chance for the win. He came back out later in the race but ended up with losing his engine late in the race.
As the race progressed, Bruening showed the way while Tad Pospisil and Justin Kay put on a tight battle for the second spot. The race for fourth was just as competitive as Cory Dumpert and Andy Eckrich swapped the position back and forth.
A caution with seven laps to go set up the final dash for the win. Bruening hit his marks while Kay and Pospisil exchanged good restarts as they continued their race for second. Pospisil did all he could to use the top side to his advantage while Kay worked the inside line.
When it was all said and done, Tyler Bruening took home the big $5,300 paycheck just as he did at the Nationals the year before. It was Bruening’s fourth career Malvern Bank/Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking series feature win and his third win at I-80 Speedway. Pospisil and Kay took second and third while Cory Dumpert and Andy Eckrich rounded out the top five.
The Malvern Bank West Series returns to action for a two-day swing on July 31st and August 1st as the tour hits up the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas and Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. They will follow that weekend up with a trip to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska on August 8th before the East series return to action.
