Kay notches first East Series Victory in Mason City
By Anthony Ainslie

A Sunday showdown awaited the Hauliní with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series as the tour finished out its weekend at Mason City Motor Speedway.
Sunday marked round four for the East Series as the tour made its first ever visit to Mason City, Iowa. A field of 19 cars made the trip to the high-banked third-mile oval. This would be the last stop on the tour before a three-week break.
To kick off the 35-lap main event, it was Jeff Tharp taking command of the lead. Meanwhile Jason Hahne and Justin Kay were quick to work their ways toward the front. Hahne got into a battle with Andrew Kosiski for the third position early on. Kay also worked his way into the top five before the first of three cautions came out for a two-car crash on the front stretch.
A lap after the restart, Kay made his way underneath Tharp and took the lead as the field came out of turn two with 23 laps remaining. The second yellow flag came out one lap later for a spin in turn one.
As the race continued on, the preferred racing line went from the top lane to the low lane, and Kay picked up on that as the field continued to make its way to the bottom. Other drivers moved their way through the field as East Series point leader Tad Pospisil worked his way into the top three as he and Hahne had a tight battle for the second position. That battle turned into a three-car battle for the lead as Pospisil and Hahne caught up to Kay as he struggled with lapped traffic. The race was shaping up to get close and competitive before the final yellow flag came out for a spinout on the back stretch.
The final caution set up a six-lap dash to the finish. Kay hit his marks on the restart, and Pospisil and Hahne could not put a close enough challenge. Kay took the $3,000 payday and his first East Series win. It was his third Malvern Bank/Hauliní with Hoker Trucking series win of his career.
Pospisil had another good points night after taking second while Hahne got third. Jeff Tharp and Andrew Kosiski rounded out the top five. Joel Calahan had a good night as well finishing eighth after starting dead last in 19th position.
The East Series takes the next three weeks off until they meet back up with the Malvern Bank West Series as the twin tours go head to head to kick off the 10th annual Silver Dollar Nationals at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska on July 22nd.
Meanwhile, the West Series has two races before the big showdown at I-80. On July 12th, the tour has a trip to the Boone County Raceway in Albion, Nebraska. The tourís last race before the Nationals is a Saturday night race at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa on July 18th.
