Kay Survives Simpson Onslaught to capture first Yankee Dirt Classic Title
By Anthony Ainslie
8/23/19

A new champion of the Yankee Dirt Classic was crowned Friday as the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series put an exclamation point on the tour’s first visit to Farley, Iowa.
Friday night was the finale of the 42nd Yankee Dirt Classic. It was the biggest and richest race the Malvern Bank Series has ever had. A field of 42 cars checked to punch their tickets in to the 50-lap, $12,000 to win main event. The top five finishers in the feature also received an invite to the Midwest Mobile Tech 22 at Knoxville Raceway on September.
A field of 27 cars was assembled for the main event, and it was 2017 Yankee Dirt Classic winner Chris Simpson on the pole. The Oxford, Iowa driver jumped to the early lead before the first caution of the race came out just two laps into the event.
A total of eight cautions came out in the race, and all of them came within the first 22 laps of the race. Multiple incidents included favorites to win the race. Jason Rauen was knocked out of the race on lap 15 after contact with Tyler Bruening sent him to the inside wall of the back stretch as they battled for second. Rauen finished 26th.
Another wreck included Thursday’s feature winner Jeff Aikey. The Ceder Falls native came to a stop in turn one after contact with Charlie McKenna, again battling for the second spot. He finished back in 24th.
The final caution came out after Charlie McKenna spun out in turn two and collected Corey Zeitner. They would finish 21st and 22nd in the finishing order.
As the laps continued to wind down, Chris Simpson continued to lead while his brother Chad worked his way into the top five and while Justin Kay ran second.
The big moment of the race was with 20 laps to go, Chris Simpson’s car suddenly dropped off the pace through turns three and four. This allowed Kay to charge to the lead while Chad Simpson moved into second.
In the final laps, Kay led while Chad Simpson closed in on him in hopes of finding an opening. Kay again led as they top three went into the final corner. Simpson made a last-ditch effort and went to the top-side in turns three and four, but he came up short.
Justin Kay held off both Simpsons to capture the biggest late model win of his career. It was Kay’s second Malvern Bank Series win, and he became the 23rd different winner in the 42 history of the Yankee Dirt Classic.
Chad and Chris Simpson took second and third while Andy Eckrich came in fourth, and Jeremiah Hurst came from 16th to round out the top five.
The Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series’ next race was scheduled to be Junction Motor Speedway on Saturday, but it was called off after the speedway was hit by rain. The tour will now head to Harlan, Iowa for the second and final visit to Shelby County Speedway on August 31. After Harlan, the tour heads back to Nebraska on September 8 for the Nebraska Cup at the Eagle Raceway in Eagle.
