Grabowski outruns Simpson for Modified Victory. Late Models qualified for Silver Dollar Nationals through double round heat races
By Anthony Ainslie

The chase for the Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals grand prize began Friday with qualifying heat races while the modifieds took to I-80 Speedway for the first time in the weekend.
The 11th annual Silver Dollar Nationals saw 44 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series drivers battle in two rounds of heat races for the first 18 starting spots in Saturday’s $53,000 to win main event. Also, a stout field of 47 modifieds took to I-80 Speedway for their first of two complete shows.
Friday’s 25-lap modified feature saw Chris Simpson jump out to the early lead. The Oxford, Iowa driver, who was also running with the late models, led the way even when the race’s two cautions came out on lap five.
Simpson continued to lead the way, and before long Jordan Grabowski and Kelly Shryock made it a three-car battle for the race lead. They went three-wide on multiple occasions, but Grabowski made the go-ahead move for the lead with 13 laps to go.
Grabowski led the second half of the race and went on to take home the first $3,500 top prize. Simpson and Shryock took the other two podium spots while Terry Phillips and Jake O’Neil rounded out the top five.
For the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, the drivers went through two rounds of five heat races. Drivers had to collect passing and finishing points in order to determine the starters of the first nine rows for Saturday’s main event.
In round one, Brian Shirley took the first heat while Chris Simpson took the second. Multiple-time I-80 Speedway Track Champion Tad Pospisil took the third heat after race long leader Ricky Thornton Jr. suffered mechanical issues and dropped out on the final lap.
Kyle Bronson took a convincing win in the fourth heat. The fifth and final heat of the first round suffered a delay after Dusty Leonard wrecked in turn three and ended up tearing out a section of the catch fence. Leonard was uninjured, but repairs to the fence took about 45 minutes. In the end, Shane Clanton took the final heat race win.
Round two saw some tight racing. The first heat, however, was dominated by Canadian Ricky Weiss. Heat two saw a great battle between Scott Bloomquist and Chase Junghans for the win. The victory ultimately went to Bloomquist. Stormy Scott would take heat three. In heat four, Georgia drivers Jonathan Davenport and Brandon Overton put on a highly-contested battle for the lead. In the end, it was Davenport taking the win. Finally, the last heat of the night went to Hudson O’Neal after a dominating run.
After all the points were tallied, it was Las Cruces, New Mexico’s Stormy Scott winning the pole position for the 80-lap, $53,000 to win main event. Scott finished second in heat four of round one, and as mentioned, won his heat in round two. On the outside of the front row would be Chase Junghans. The Manhattan, Kansas native scored second-place finishes in both of his heats. Now, two B-mains and a non-qualifiers race are left to run to determine the rest of the starting field for the 11th annual Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals main event.
