Hafertepe Outduels Crockett in Wild Midwest Fall Brawl Showdown at I-80
By Anthony Ainslie
9/12/20

Sprint car action returned to I-80 Speedway in a big way. Some of the world’s best 360 sprinters took to Greenwood Saturday night for the Casey’s General Stores Midwest Fall Brawl.
The eighth addition of the race brought in the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) and the Carpet Land Nebraska 360 Sprint Series for a massive Saturday night showcase. The Nebraska 360 Series wassupposed to also run the night before for the rescheduled Bobby Parker Memorial, but rain caused that race to combine with the Midwest Fall Brawl making for a main event with some big money on the line. The old iron of the Good Ol’ Time Racing Association was also on tap as 16 vintage coupes came out to do battle.
In total, a strong field of 41 cars from 11 U.S. states, Canada and Australia made the trip out to I-80 Speedway, but only 26 cars made the field for the 35-lap main event. ASCS points leader Sam Hafertepe Jr. jumped out to the lead from the pole position and led the opening five laps before Roger Crokett took command and proceeded to run away with the show.
As Crokett led, Hafertepe ran second while Dylan Westbrook and Jack Dover ran up behind and beside Hafertepe for the runner up position. Hafertepe successfully fended both of them off as Dover and Westbrook faded back to finish sixth and seventh.
The race went 21 laps before the first of two cautions came out for two cars spinning on the front stretch and the entrance of turn three. This would be the setup for a wild duel between Crockett and Hafertepe for the lead.
In the final 14 laps, Crockett and Hafertepe swapped the lead back and forth trading the lead officially three times as they crossed the line and more times throughout the laps.
The final caution came out with just two laps remaining for a slow car on the back stretch. In the green-white-checkered dash to the finish, Hafertepe blocked Crockett initial run off the top side. As they came to the checkered flag, Hafertepe went high while Crockett went low. The duo drag-raced to the finish line with Hafertepe narrowly edging out Crockett for the win by .093 seconds.
Crockett would have to settle for second while Austin McCarl took third. Scott Bogucki and Matt Covington finished out the top five.
In the Good Ol’Time Racing Association feature, Larry Proskocil led the opening lap before Jim Thompson took command of the lead after charging all the way up to the front from the 14th starting spot.
Thompson led, but in the closing laps, Darrell Doerr worked the outside of the track and was making a big charge for the lead. In the end, Thompson hung on to take the win while Doerr would have to settle for the second spot. Bob Workmeister came from dead last 16th to finish third followed by Chris Lavicky and Kevin Kay to round out the top five.
